Superintendent and Professor of Soil Science
Education:
1981, Ph.D. Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition, Oregon State University
1979, M.S. Soil Fertility, Oregon State University
1976, B.S. Crop Science, Michigan State University
Research Activities:
Steve Petrie conducts research into soil fertility and plant nutrition and agronomic aspects of dryland cereals and potential alternate crops including winter wheat and winter barley, spring wheat and spring barley, and safflower. His soil fertility work focuses on the following areas: the effect of N rate and timing on soft white winter wheat yield and quality, the effect of N rate and timing on hard red wheat yield and quality, and the effect of P fertilizer on Hessian fly infestation of spring wheat. He has also conducted field trials on chloride fertilizer responses and physiological leaf spot of winter wheat and winter barley, the optimum management of winter barley, N fertilizer rmanagement of 'Supersoft' and waxy white winter wheat, and optimum fertilization of food barley. He is currently investigating the adaptation and management of winter safflower at Pendleton. Steve is also investigating the economic returns of various cropping systems in the long term experiments at Pendleton and Moro.
